THE BEST CITY IN THE WORLD

In 2020, the concept of the best city to live in has changed. The city where we live best in 2020 is also the one that has responded best to the coronavirus.

Indeed, the annual ranking of Global Finance magazine has been brought up to date. In their search for the best city in which to live in the world, they kept their usual parameters but they also added the data on deaths of Covid-19 per million inhabitants and valued it by a factor of 3 to give it the priority.

Thus, to be the best city in the world, it is necessary to score points in economic power, research and development, cultural interaction, livability, environment and accessibility (data from the Global City Power report), in addition to the per capita income (World Bank data).

But also, and for the first time in 2020, data on people affected by the pandemic, provided by Johns Hopkins University and Statista, is included.

So some of the cities that were consistently in the top 10 or top 20 fell to lower positions due to their poor data during the pandemic. Brussels moved up to 43rd position, Milan in 40th and Barcelona and Madrid fell to 38th and 35th positions respectively.

The gold medal for the best city therefore goes to Tokyo, which was one of the fastest in making decisions to deal with the virus. Japan closed the borders and announced it was postponing the Olympics, succeeding in containing the virus more quickly.
